Wallpaper is a familiar choice for those who want more than just white walls. But in Thailand, wallpaper is money thrown away. 70–90% humidity does its work: glue softens, paper swells, mold grows behind the wallpaper.
At LuxeSpan, we regularly remove wallpaper that's less than six months old. Here's what happens and what alternative works in the tropics.
What Happens to Wallpaper in Tropical Climate
- Glue loses adhesion. At 80%+ humidity, wallpaper glue softens. Wallpaper starts peeling from walls within 2–4 months
- Mold behind wallpaper. Between wallpaper and concrete, a perfect fungal environment forms — warm, humid, unventilated
- Paper deforms. Even vinyl wallpaper on paper backing swells and bubbles
- Smell. Mold behind wallpaper creates a musty odor that's impossible to eliminate without removal
Why "Moisture-Resistant" Wallpaper Also Fails
Manufacturers rate wallpaper as "moisture-resistant" for humidity up to 65%. Thailand humidity is 80–95% — beyond the specification of any wallpaper. Even fiberglass and non-woven wallpaper fails: the problem isn't the wallpaper itself, but the glue and substrate.
Stretch Walls: The Permanent Wallpaper Alternative
The MSD Premium PVC membrane is a non-porous material that isn't glued but stretched on a frame. Between the membrane and concrete — a 2–3 cm air gap.
