The most common question in Phuket: "Can you install air conditioning with a stretch ceiling?" Yes, but the installation sequence is critical. Here's how to do it right.
Air conditioning in Phuket condos. 85–95% humidity forces split systems to run 24/7. In Royal Phuket Marina and Cassia Laguna, drain tubes clog with slime within 3–4 months. LuxeSpan mounting brackets ensure AC access without ceiling disassembly.
Rule #1: Pipes BEFORE, AC unit AFTER (or we adapt on-site)
- Refrigerant line is routed along the concrete slab → the stretch ceiling conceals it
- Drain line is run before the membrane is installed → no risk of condensate leaks
- Indoor unit — the ideal engineering sequence is to mount the split-system indoor unit after the stretch membrane is in place. This completely eliminates thermal stress on the AC plastic during membrane heat-shrinking. The profile level is set with a mandatory 10–15 cm gap for unobstructed air intake. If the AC is already wall-mounted, the on-site engineer assesses the clearances and selects the safest installation protocol: temporary removal with refrigerant pump-down, construction of a bypass niche (without interfering with the climate system), or precision stretching using protective heat shields
Rule #2: If the indoor unit is flush against the slab
The split system's air intake is on top. If there is no gap, stretching the ceiling "under the AC" is impossible — a sealed PVC membrane would cut off the air supply, and the indoor unit's evaporator would inevitably ice up due to lack of heat exchange. In this case, our engineers build a custom bypass niche around the unit (to maintain airflow), or the unit is technically lowered by 10–15 cm.
Concealed and ceiling-mounted AC systems
- ✅ Cassette (ceiling-mounted) — a rigid mounting frame is installed; the membrane seamlessly meets the body of the indoor unit
- ✅ Ducted — linear grilles and slot diffusers are integrated via specialised concealed aluminium profiles (plenum boxes). The membrane tucks directly into the grille profile, creating a flawless aesthetic joint without plastic frames

A critical mistake made by many installers in Phuket is poor insulation of the refrigerant line running behind the suspended ceiling. In a tropical climate, heavy condensation forms instantly on the cold copper tubing. If the line is not wrapped in proper closed-cell elastomeric insulation (e.g. Aeroflex), condensate will start dripping onto the inside of the ceiling. A PVC membrane will hold this water and prevent damage to furniture, but a properly engineered installation requires eliminating the very physical possibility of condensation forming above the ceiling.
