Termites in Thailand: How to Protect Your Home Finishes

The Scale of the Problem

Thailand ranks among the world's top 10 countries for termite activity. In Chonburi Province (Pattaya, Jomtien, Sri Racha), subterranean termites are part of the ecosystem.

Termites feed on cellulose — the primary component of wood, paper, and cardboard. Any finishing material containing cellulose is food for them. It's not a question of "if" but "when."

Which Materials Are at Risk

Drywall (plasterboard): Sheets are wrapped in cardboard — pure cellulose. Termites chew through the cardboard shell and destroy the structure from within. The damage is often invisible until the ceiling begins to sag.

Wood structures: Beams, battens, skirting boards — direct targets. Antiseptic treatment provides protection for just 3–5 years.

Wallpaper: Paper-based and vinyl wallpaper on a paper backing contain cellulose. Termites can work behind wallpaper for months unnoticed.

Why PVC Membrane Is the Only 100% Solution

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a synthetic polymer. It contains no organic fibres, cellulose, or components that termites can digest.

This isn't "resistance" or "treatment." It's a physical impossibility. Termites cannot feed on PVC any more than they can feed on glass or aluminium.

LuxeSpan stretch systems are made from MSD Premium PVC membranes. The mounting profile is aluminium. Both components are entirely inert to termites.

Mounting Profiles — Also Protected

It's not enough to have a PVC membrane if it's mounted on a wooden batten. LuxeSpan uses aluminium profiles — metal containing no organic matter. The entire system, from membrane to fasteners, is outside the risk zone.

An Additional Barrier

A stretch ceiling creates a sealed space between the membrane and the base slab. The PVC membrane acts as a physical barrier — impenetrable and inedible.

What to Do If Termites Are Already Present

  1. Call pest control — professional treatment eliminates the colony
  2. Replace damaged finishes — drywall, wood, wallpaper
  3. Install a LuxeSpan stretch system — so the problem never recurs

We regularly work on sites after pest treatment. Installation of a new ceiling takes just 1 day.
